Invitation to attend service to launch 150th anniversary of Disestablishment

150th anniversary of Disestablishment.

The official launch of the Church of Ireland’s National Programme to mark 150th anniversary of Disestablishment will begin at the opening commemorative National Service in St Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin, on Saturday, 23rd November 2019, at 3pm with the Archbishop of Canterbury as preacher.

Tickets for members of the general public are available at the following link; https://www.ireland.anglican.org/news/9019/d150-national-service-of-commemoration

The Cathedral has also created a ticketing option for representatives from each diocese of the Church including Clogher Diocese to attend the service. Follow the link at the Church of Ireland website story which connects to a website from which a maximum of 20 tickets is available. A maximum of four tickets can be taken per transaction.

The service will be followed by a panel discussion entitled ‘Second City, 300, 150, Today’ starting at 6pm, as part of the annual Jonathan Swift Festival. Registration is essential via a separate link.

Swift, a fervent defender of the Church of Ireland, but also a fierce critic of the hypocrisy of his age, lived much of his life between London and Dublin: the first and second cities of the British Empire.

150 years after the Disestablishment of his beloved Church, the panel will consider what he would think, against the backdrop of Brexit, the future holds for Ireland and Great Britain, or for Church/State relations? It will discuss these and other important questions of our time.

Panel members will include the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Mary McAleese and others. The discussion is expected to finish around 7pm.

This event is proudly supported by the programme to mark the Disestablishment of the Church of Ireland.

The event is free of charge but registration is essential.
