Death of former Dean of Clogher

 


Dean Raymond Craigmile Thompson, who has died at his home at Irvinestown, Co. Fermanagh had retired in August 2009 as the Dean of Clogher and Rector of the Clogher Cathedral Group of Parishes.

Paying tribute this week, the Bishop of Clogher, the Right Revd Dr Ian Ellis said; “Dean Raymond will be remembered for his faithful pastoral ministry in all the parishes in which he has served. He felt a strong sense of duty to help people showing the care and compassion of Christ and gave freely of his time and talents throughout his ministry and particularly in loyal service to this diocese of Clogher.”

Dean Thompson was born in Belfast and was educated at Omagh Academy and Coleraine Inst before his graduation from Trinity College Dublin.

He was ordained as a Deacon in 1984, for the Priesthood in 1985 and served his curacy in All Saints Church, Clooney in Derry Diocese from 1984-1986.

He was appointed Rector of Urney Parish, also in Derry Diocese and served there until 1992 when he was appointed Rector of Derryvullen North and Castle Archdale, Irvinestown, a position he held until 2005. He then served as Rector of Clogher Cathedral Group of Parishes covering Clogher, Errigal Portclare, Augher and Newtownsaville as Dean of Clogher until his retirement in 2009. He had previously been appointed a Canon and Bishop’s Chaplain.

He is survived by his wife, Canon Betty Thompson and they have one son, Mark.

The Funeral Service will take place in Derryvullen North Parish Church, Irvinestown on Wednesday 27th August at 1.00pm, followed by burial in the adjoining Churchyard.
