Clogher Cathedral hosts first Service of Enthronement of Bishop of Clogher

 


At the Service of Enthronement of Bishop Ian Ellis at Clogher Cathedral.

The first of two Services of Enthronement of the Bishop of Clogher, the Right Revd Dr. Ian Ellis, took place in St. Macartan’s Cathedral, Clogher, on Thursday, 8th September.

Many of the members of the congregation who had gathered for the service learned of the death of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II while waiting for the service to begin. Special prayers were read by Dean Kenneth Hall and by Bishop Ian Ellis and the National Anthem was played by organist, Mr. Glenn Moore.

The procession of churchwardens, parish readers, diocesan readers, ecumenical guests, visiting Church of Ireland clergy, clergy of Clogher Diocese, the Chapter of both cathedrals Diocesan Registrar, the Dean’s Verger and the Dean of Clogher made their way up the aisle to the singing of “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation!”

Then, following the opening greeting and the Reading of the Mandate by the Dean, the ceremonial entrance of Bishop Ellis began. He arrived at the West Door to find it closed and struck the door three times with his pastoral staff to which the Dean replied, “Let the doors be opened! Right Reverend Father in God, we have looked forward to your coming with great joy. In the name of the Lord we greet you and welcome you into your Cathedral Church.”

The Dean’s Verger, Mr. Andy McCabe led the procession of the Dean; Diocesan Registrar, the Revd John McClenaghan; Diocesan Chancellor, the Right Hon. Lord Stephens of Creevyloughgare and the Bishop of Clogher and his Chaplain, Revd Chris West.

The collect for St. Macartan’s Day was read and followed by the Act of Enthronement.

The first reading was by the Very Revd Canon Noel McGahan, PP, Parish Priest of Clogher and the second reading was by the Venerable Brian Harper, Archdeacon of Clogher.

The Bishop preached the sermon.

The hymns included “Jesus, where’er thy people meet,” “O thou who camest from above,” and “Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart.”

Prayers and Thanksgivings were read by the following;
- A prayer for the clergy and people was led by Mr. Jack Johnston, Historical Archivist to Clogher Cathedral and a member of Diocesan Council.
- A prayer for the Eastern Church was led by Mrs Heather Ellis, Diocesan Mothers’ Union President.
- A prayer for the increase of the ministry was led by Mrs Dawn Hutchinson, Principal of Drummacruttin National School.
- A prayer for schools, education and young people was led by Mr. Johnston Reid, Principal of Monaghan Collegiate School.

Tea followed the service in Clogher Cathedral Hall.
