St. Tighernach`s Church, Clones - Golf Classic

The golf classic in aid of St Tighernach’s Church, Clones, started on Friday 28th May at Hilton Park Golf Club, Clones. The day was bright and clear with a light breeze, a perfect day for golf. Twenty teams took part on this the first of two days, and all were in good spirits as they teed off! After ten holes the teams were treated to a burger and a drink ably served by Sammy Mealiff, Wilson Lendrum, George Knight and assisted by Rachel Henderson. The teams then proceeded to the second half of the golf course.
On Saturday, the weather was not as favourable as the previous day, but this did not deter the hardy golfers. Twenty seven teams took part in the competition in light rain which continued for most of the day.
The Burger Bar half way around the course was kept busy, as well as dealing with the players they entertained some of the visiting parishioners who were interested in seeing the competition being played. They were ferried from the Club House by Golf Buggy driven by Ivor Lendrum, chairman of the classic committee. He was kept busy for the two days.
The competition ended on Saturday evening with the prize giving, hosted by Kevin Hickey and attended by representatives of the main sponsors Clones Credit Union.
The winners were George Crowes team Univet. In 2nd place Cootehill Credit Union and in 3rd Michael Connolly’s team. There were numerous other prizes.
The 32 inch Flat Screen TV with a DVD player was won by a local Clones lady Katie McGuigan, mother of Barry McGuigan.
The Classic was a great success, and we have been urged to run another one possibly on a yearly basis.
The Revd Helene Steed thanked the main sponsor Clones Credit Union for their support and the Golf Club for the use of their magnificent facility. She also thanked the community for their amazing support in sponsoring the goodies for the burger bar and for sponsoring the Tees.
Ivor Lendrum, chair of the classic committee thanked his members for the work that they had put in to make the event the success that it was. Special mention was given to Michael Connolly, Wilson Lendrum, Sammy Mealiff, Padraig Geoghegan and Raymond Stronge. He said that he was amazed at the amount of support that was received from the community and thanked all the sponsors and players and the course ground staff and volunteers. A good night was enjoyed by all after the speeches.
