ARCHBISHOP OF YORK TO VISIT CLOGHER IN YEAR OF CELEBRATIONS

The Archbishop of York, the Most Reverend and Right Honourable Dr John Sentamu, will visit the Diocese of Clogher from 23rd to 26th March, as part of the celebrations to mark the 1500th anniversary of St Macartan, Patron Saint of Clogher.

Archbishop Sentamu is the first member of a racial minority to serve as an archbishop in the Church of England. Born in 1949 in Uganda, he studied law at Makerere University, and practised as an Advocate of the High Court of Uganda. He was appointed a High Court Judge at the age of 24; but his judicial independence resulted in threats and physical violence before fleeing to the United Kingdom in 1974. He studied for a doctorate in theology at Ridley Hall, Cambridge, and was ordained as a priest in 1979. He worked as an assistant chaplain at Selwyn College, Cambridge, as a chaplain at a remand centre, and in a series of parish appointments before his consecration in 1996 as Bishop of Stepney. During this time he served as advisor to the Stephen Lawrence Judicial Enquiry. In 2002 he was appointed Bishop of Birmingham, and also chaired the Damilola Taylor review.
